A Comparison Between Desirees Baby & Stench Of Kerosene Essay -- Engli
A Comparison Between Desirees Baby & Stench Of KeroseneStench Of Kerosene was written by Amrita Pritam approximately fiftyyears ago. This emotional short story principally revolves around therelationships between a woman, her husband and his m different. Anotherimportant fundament is the significance of cultures and traditions in theprotagonists lives. The main credits be Manak and Guleri, who are husband and married woman.Guleri and Manak are a loving couple who live with Manaks mother in asmall village in India. Guleri cannot give birth and her mother-in-lawdesperately wants a grandchild.Once a year, during a special festival, Guleri cut backs her parents in a close village. This year, Manak halfheartedly tries to persuade hiswife not to go. Adamant, Guleri pays no heed to her husbands baselesswish, and goes to visit her parents regardless. Upon her departure,Manaks evil mother decides to bring an end her grandchild-lessstatus, and immediately purchases a wife for Manak, in the hope thatthis new bride could extradite the baby Guleri could not. When news of her husbands treason reaches Guleri, she commitssuicide by dousing herself with kerosene, and consequently settingherself alight.Desirees Baby, by Kate Chopin, amongst other themes, also exploresthe theme of relationships.Desiree, the female protagonist, is an orphan who was found at the precedent of the Valmonde home, lying asleep in the shadows of a big stonepillar. Madame Valmonde, the owner of the large house cannot preparechildren hence welcoming the child and treating her as her own. When Desiree grows up, she marries a man from a prestigious family. After a consummation of marital bliss, they both have a child whom theyimmensely love.... ...they do not obviouslystate what was wrong with the women. Desiree is made out to be sosweet and loving - her beauty helping to draw the readers into kindliness for her. It is not blatantly stated that it was stupid of herto commit suicide. Likewise, Guleri should really have had trust inher husband, and listened to what he told her instead of proudlyignoring his pleas. This shows that although their relationshipexternally shows happiness, there were some serious problems thatoccurred beneath the surface. Hence, I conclude that in DesireesBaby, Armand was wrong to have so much pride, but Desirees weakcharacter spurned her awful fate. In Stench of Kerosine, Manak wasweak and stupid, but the consequences of his marrying again could havebeen avoided if Guleri trusted her husband. It is simply too easy toblame the men alone for what happened.
